On Friday the FDA announced that the drug Humira which has been prescribed for various other conditions including rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, will now be be able to be used as an ulcerative colitis treatment. UC is a disease that causes inflation of the large intestine which then in term causes a variety of symptoms in those afflicted. However, it was not approved as a first line treatment and is only supposed to be prescribed by doctors after other treatments have proven unsuccessful. It is remarkable how many diseases are caused by some form of inflation in the body and hopefully last week’s approval will provide some degree of relief to those with UC.
The FDA issued a warning about the use of topical creams and gel pain relievers as new evidence suggest that topical analgesic irritation can be extreme in a small number of people. This could include an intense burning sensation which could also lead to blistering and a skin rash.
Seek medical attention if this happens to you and remember to always use common sense by not using these types of skins on broken or already irritated skin. If you have not used this medication in the past, you might also want to apply it to just a small portion of your skin first to make sure no problems arise.
Of course in my case I will also have to exercise a bit first to have to worry about sore muscles.
The new drug is called Tofacitinib which is part of a new class of drugs called Janus kinases which early research indicates may be more effective at treating rheumatoid arthritis than the current drugs on the market, such as the commonly prescribed methotrexate (MTX). The drug is still not approved in the US but hopefully these early trials will lead to some new and much needed remedy for chronic joint pain.
While there is no cure, there are treatment options for ankylosing spondylitis and the associated pain in the sacroiliac joint which is in the lower back. As with other joint and muscle pain issues NSAIDs are usually the first drug to try given the relatively low number of side effects. Physical therapy or activity has also proven effective at treating the pain in the sacroiliac joint. Plus there is a new crop of drugs that have recently been approved to treat ankylosing spondylitis that only your doctor can prescribe. However, there is a new report that points out the potential dangers and risks of using vitamins and supplements to treat joint and muscle pain. In particular, it is never safe to assume that because it is believed that a pill is or claims to be natural that it is automatically safe. It is still possible to overdose on a supplement or to do some other damage to your body. If you don’t have a vitamin deficiency you probably don’t even need to take anything but if you are going to try a supplement to help with joint pain or another condition, always play it safe and speak to your doctor first.
A new study looks at the effectiveness of the rheumatoid arthritis drug methotrexate in patients suffering from psoriatic arthritis. While the results were slightly mixed this drug did not have any effect on synovitis, or the painful swelling of the joints associated with this disease. As usual however always talk to your doctor before stopping or starting any medication.
I think that everyone has to admit that the stress that is present in all of our daily lives has to be a big contributor to the aches and pains we feel in our bodies. This is not to diminish the real muscles and joint diseases that exist, however how often have you ever had a flare up or a bad day and noticed that you seemed to be in much more pain? Plus, lets not forget the classic “stress headache” that seems to bother so many adults.
What to do about this phenomenon? Simply telling yourself to chill out can actually be a quick way to make things worse. Nevertheless, simple light exercise, meditation, deep breathing, stretching or yoga all have proven effective for people worldwide. Tranquilizers or benzos(valium, xanax, etc.) can be effective but with all the dangers and potential side effects that come with them it hardly seems like a long term solution.
